Vertical Landscapes: New Work by HK Miller

HK Miller’s latest paintings are an intentional departure from his wide, horizontally formatted paintings of rural landscapes. Now the sky becomes a dominant feature...
He explores new ways to frame the rural landscapes that surround us. Rather than putting architecture front and center in his work, these new pieces feature the skyline, giving us a feeling of awe, a sense that we as humans are connected to something larger than our day-to-day lives.
Art Opening: Friday, April 4th from 6-8PM
The show runs through April 26th.

His work encompasses landscapes he has grown to love throughout his life, largely featuring the Western Pennsylvania region. However a few other places like New Jersey, Virginia, and New Mexico pop in and make their appearance as well.
Landscapes include:
Pennsylvania:
Adams County, PA
Bedford County, PA
Cookport, PA
Indiana, PA
Indiana County, PA
North Central, PA
Westmoreland County, PA
and the Wider Western Pennsylvania Region
New Jersey
Southern New Jersey
New Mexico

About HK Miller:
"Painting is quite simple... you put the correct colors and shapes in the correct places."
- James Innes, 1971
Harold K. (HK) Miller was born in 1950 in southern New Jersey. He attended IUP, earning a BA in 1972 and an M. Ed. in 1975. Harold began painting full time after retiring in 2006 from the Indiana Area School District. Acting upon the suggestion of his wife, Susan, he began painting landscapes graced by farmhouses, barns, and accompanying outbuildings. His sunjects can be found from North Carolina to Vermont; of particular interest are those in western Pennsylvania and the Gettysburg battlefield.
Harold lives in Indiana with his wife of 52 years His major influences include Andrew Wyeth, Douglas Fryer, and T. Allen Lawson.
In the words of HK Miller about this exhibit:
"For as long as I can remember, I have been creating landscape paintings that emphasize the horizontal lay of the land with it's accompanying contours, foilage, and occasional man-mande structures. Show sweeping vistas was of prime importance to me. Lately, however, my concentration has been a more vertical interpretation with sky dominating the composition. Balancing a larger sky with minimal, but intricately detailed land area is a creative and enjoyable challenge. I hope you enjoy the show." - HK Miller
